As the seasons change, so do the foods that grow locally in your region. By choosing seasonal produce, you simplify your cooking, reduce kitchen clutter, boost your nutrient intake, and enjoy foods at their peak flavor.
Ever had a tomato in December? Likely, it wasn’t the best. But that same tomato in July or August? Absolute perfection, bursting with flavor no matter how you slice it (ha!). This peak summer flavor also signals that the tomato’s nutrient content is at its highest.
Another way to maximize flavor and nutrition is to buy directly from local farmers who’ve harvested the produce within hours or days. In contrast, much of what’s available in conventional grocery stores has traveled hundreds, sometimes thousands, of miles. With each passing day after harvest, the nutrients in fresh produce naturally decline. One easy way to retain both flavor and nutrition when shopping at a grocery store is to buy frozen fruits and vegetables, which are flash-frozen soon after harvest to preserve their goodness.
To help you get started, I’ve put together a guide of my favorite seasonal foods to keep on hand for quick, nourishing meals. You’ll also find a list of go-to breakfasts, dinners, and snacks that we’re loving this November.
